For many years he taught graduate credit courses at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was a Landsdowne Scholar at the University of Victoria in 1991 and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta in 1988 and at the University of Alaska in 1995. He has served as Commissioner for the American Council of Education and as a consultant to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. He has received awards from the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education, the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, The Wisconsin Council for Writers, Wisconsin Library Association, The Wisconsin Association for Adult and Continuing Education, the University Extension, and the Robert E. Gard Foundation.
